Here is an example of our award-winning Kodály pre-school music class for 0-4s.
Families sing and move together to our circle song “Go Round the Mountain”, practicing ensemble singing, coordination, walking to a steady beat and preparing the “mi-re-do” tone set for later learning.
Grown ups support their children to play medium, fast and slow tempi on the claves to our song “Play together”. This material is repeated every week, so the children are used to the change of tempo and older children begin to play in time with the teacher.
Children experience free musical movement with the scarves. We dance to a variety of orchestral and world popular musics; we chose these ‘Romanian Folk Dances’ from Béla Bartók for their musical variety and fun!
Every child is given the opportunity to come up to the front and play our “so-mi” minor third song “Hey Hey Look at Me”, followed by a short free improvisation, on our beautiful Studio49 alto xylophone with their teacher. Children practice turn taking, celebrating their peers, coordination using the beaters, and performing to others.
Carolyn plays ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ on her clarinet to end our session with some calm while the grown-ups sing together and the children rock our hand-knitted teddy bears.
