Our vision

Music at Heart is an award-winning, non-profit music school based in Chapel Allerton/Harehills, in North Leeds. Our vision is to nurture a child’s lifelong love of music, by providing quality musical experiences to babies, toddlers and children in the early years. Using the Kodály approach to music education, we create community through singing, movement and instrumental playing in our gentle and inclusive classes.

FREE and subsidised classes for families facing barriers

Kodály said that “music belongs to everybody“. Music at Heart serves the diverse community of Leeds and aims to enable all families to attend our classes without barriers. We offer free and subsidised class places to those on low incomes, with SEND, single parent families, and those struggling with mental health in the first 2 years of parenting. We welcome asylum seekers and refugees, non-English speakers, LGBTQ+ families and foster and adoptive families with care-experienced children.

We are so grateful to the generous support of good will donations, as well as funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to support our work. In 2025, our director Caitlin has also been awarded a grant by the Arts Council to develop her creative and musical practice.

What our parents say…

Caitlin is a real musical talent and a natural teacher who brings so much enthusiasm to all her classes. It’s lovely seeing her make music with and for babies. This is my favourite baby class…I tell all my friends about it!

Our little boy has speech delay and has been attending Music at Heart for a couple of months. We have been really grateful and happy to see how much his speech has developed and improved since he has been going to the classes every week. He enjoys the beautiful instruments and Kodály music and we have noticed how much he repeats and wants to practise the songs at home. His speech is coming out through singing

Music at Heart has meant so much to me and my daughter over the last year and a half. Her confidence has noticeably increased. She happily joins in playing all the wonderful instruments, and she absolutely loves singing, both in class and at home. I’m so grateful that this class exists. It’s a brilliant way of teaching children music.

Caitlin’s singing group has been a joy to be a part of. It’s lovely to have a class that is for both me and my baby, we both love it and find it very relaxing. The songs are so special and I find myself singing them all the time, a nice break from the usual nursery rhymes. I’d recommend this class to anyone!

Caitlin and Carolyn’s classes have been of huge benefit to us as a family. Having struggled with my mental health as a new mother during the covid era, the classes were very welcoming. My son thrived socially, and his communication improved through singing and interacting with his peers. I got to meet other parents and have lovely conversations that helped my mental wellbeing. I would highly recommend these classes to families in Leeds, where the passion for music and family values are sincerely shared through music making.

It’s so refreshing to find a good quality music class that isn’t totally manic and full of bad singing as we’ve experienced in the past! It’s such a lovely environment you’ve created and the ethos is fantastic.

I’ve been to another music class with my other granddaughter, and it was good, but not a patch on this.

Lara and I absolutely love attending Friday classes with Carolyn. It has such a calming atmosphere which is beneficial for both of us. Lara is learning so much and loves every aspect of the session. Her confidence is growing by the week and it’s really showing through her singing along with, and in front of, the class. I also love that I’m encouraged to sing…though I don’t have the best voice I love singing, and the environment Carolyn and June have created allows me to express myself without fear of judgement. It’s a 10/10 for me. Thank you for creating and running a wonderful class.

Meet your teachers

Caitlin and Carolyn form the small dedicated team who bring Kodály music-making to Leeds!

What is the Kodály approach?

The Kodály approach (pronounced koh-da-yee) to music education is child-centered, holistic and fun. We play singing games, learn folk songs and rhymes, move to orchestral soundscapes and explore instruments.

The story of Music at Heart

Handed down to Caitlin from her godmother Heather who originally founded the school in York, Music at Heart moved to Leeds in 2022. We won the ‘Yorkshire Prestige Awards – Best Music School’ in 2023 and have recently become a non-profit (CIC).
