A singing and wellbeing group for expectant mums.

There is no voice that your baby loves more than yours. At my Bele Mama group, we connect with our babies through singing beautiful folk and choral music. We also learn some simple rhymes and songs that we can enjoy with our baby during bath time, when feeding, or as a lullaby. Expect to feel grounded and held in the comfort of the Roundhay Quaker Meeting House´s lovely front room…this is a unique a space to meet other soon-to-be mums and take a moment for yourself and your baby.

When: Mondays 7.45-9.15pm (90 mins)

Where: Roundhay Quaker Meeting House, 136 Street Lane, Leeds LS8 2BW

Cost: £12 per session (usually booked as a 5 or 6 week block). Includes tea/coffee and cake.

What happens in the session?

We always start the session with a vocal warm up. After 10 minutes or so, we check in with each other, moving round the circle to share our names and how we are doing this week. We then sing some beautiful choir music for around 20-30 minutes; songs are taught by call and response so there is no need to read music. We follow the singing with a 15 minute comfort break with tea/coffee and cake.

After the break, I teach some timeless, simple children´s songs and rhymes. This is followed by a quiet reflection on your pregnancy this week, whilst listening to some calming live piano music. We finish every session by singing a lullaby together.

Over the course I repeat the children´s songs and rhymes every week so you can learn them really well. You can also sing all of the choir music to your baby, both when they are born and in utero.

Information about the venue

Roundhay Quaker Meeting House is located on Street Lane. We meet in the School Room which is a lovely, character-full carpeted space with a view of the garden. When you get here, walk to the right of the building, come in through the first side door, and enter the room to your left. I will be around to greet you should you have any problems. A large disabled toilet is accessible via an outside entrance just beyond the side door and the building is accessible for wheelchair users.

There is plenty of free on street parking available, however please note there is no parking at the meeting house itself. Local number 12 and 2 buses stop just outside the venue should you be arriving via public transport.

Does it matter how far along I am in my pregnancy?

I recommend coming along to group at any point during your second or third trimesters. You might wish to book onto a course which finishes a little way before your due date, just to ensure that you will be able to come to all the sessions! You are welcome to attend this group with a one off course booking, or come along to all the sessions every week until your baby arrives. I will adapt my course material to suit the needs of everyone, by integrating new songs as the groups evolve and I discover new music!
